Composer and virtuoso marimba player Keiko Abe was born in Tokyo on April 18, 1937. She has played the marimba since the age of 12, and is responsible (in collaboration with the Yamaha Musical Instrument Company) for the development of the five-octave concert marimba. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame. Evelyn Glennie is among her former students.
